Tonight’s edition of Making An Impact! will be slightly different for a few reasons. The first being that no TNA talent showcased enough to warrant a spot on this week’s list coming off of this past Thursday’s show. The second being that TNA President Dixie Carter has made some very interesting comments this past week in regards to Hulk Hogan and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Is Dixie the one that has made an impact?
The following quotes are from Dixie Carter to BANG Showbiz: “He (speaking of Hulk Hogan) is bigger than any brand, company, name – he is synonymous with wrestling and is probably one of the most recognizable faces or figures on the entire planet. Name me someone who is alive today who’d be more recognizable in any corner of the world? In places like Africa and Asia, or if you were walking in Thailand? Princess Diana or Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley maybe? But they aren’t even with us anymore. The Rock?”
“Well, if you are walking in a village in Africa would people know who The Rock was? I think his film work has been outstanding. I’m a huge fan of The Rock, I think he is phenomenal, but would that happen?”
Those are very strong comments from Dixie Carter. Now, it’s no secret that Dixie has confirmed that Hulk Hogan was her favorite wrestler (as he was/ is for many professional wrestling fans), but I can’t help but feel these comments were made more so as a way to either bring attention to TNA wrestling or to brown nose Hogan. Bringing attention to TNA is understandable and a respectable move. Brown nosing Hogan? Too many people do it already. He’s already on a continuous ego trip.
Hulk Hogan is an icon, a living legend and no one can dispute that. He was not a great wrestler by any means. However, Hulk Hogan brought professional wrestling to the mainstream world. We all know the story so I will not go back and explain. However, it’s now 2013 and times have changed. Hulk Hogan is still one of the biggest names in professional wrestling and media; however, Hogan’s stock has fallen in the eyes of those within the wrestling world, media and IWC. The most interesting thing the media has had on Hogan in recent memory is the sad situation with his son years ago, his divorce and now his sex tape. Going to business, he can spin it any way he likes, but Hogan is holding on to whatever glory he can get his hands on to remain relevant and pushing only those in his favor while amassing a “Team Hogan” backstage. Let’s shift gears a bit now…
Dwayne Johnson is a megastar. Period. He took the popularity and presence of The Rock and blended it with his work ethic and resilience to become a WORLDWIDE name. Wrestling fans know The Rock, entertainment fans know Dwayne Johnson/ The Rock. The man is now bringing wrestling back to the mainstream (if he hasn’t done it already), just like Hulk Hogan years ago. Dwayne Johnson is the most successful wrestler turned actor ever, defeating Hulk Hogan in that arena too (see WrestleMania X8). Let’s take a second and review some facts:
- Buys for WWE Royal Rumble and WWE Elimination Chamber, with The Rock headlining each show, were higher this year than in 2012.
- WWE WrestleMania 29 and WM29 weekend were highly successful events, with WM29 possibly beating last years buys.
- All of The Rock’s major films have grossed extremely well, with multiple #1 spots this year with Pain & Gain, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Fast & Furious 6 (a #1 spot for FF6 is pretty eminent).
- TNA Wrestling’ s ratings have fluctuated from stagnant to low and back to stagnant since Hogans arrival, with one or two instances of higher than normal ratings. Pay-per-view buys also leave much to be desired.
- Hulk Hogan’s and Eric Bischoff’s uncensored show drew terribly with mixed reactions, more so on the negative side.
- Hulk Hogan’s claim to fame in TNA is opening his beach shop and finding a job for Brooke since her music career is slow to snail pace.
-It was Dixie’s and her business partners’ idea to take TNA on the road, so I will not give full credit to Hogan for that.
Do you see where Dixie’s comments are a little ridiculous? Flipping it, maybe those villages she speaks of may not know who The Rock is. That’s a realistic possibility. However, if the statement is not a tactic to promote TNA’s star power or to brown nose Hulk Hogan, it is surely a false sense of power Dixie believes TNA has with Hulk Hogan on board.
For those reading this and feeling as though I am biased towards The Rock, I am a writer for TNANews.com and I enjoy TNA Wrestling. I have been watching professional wrestling since birth, literally. As a journalist, it is not my job to give you my personal opinions and feelings. It is my job to present facts and the fact is Hulk Hogan, though still truly a big name, is not a bigger star than The Rock in this day and age. Hulk Hogan’s time has come and gone, he just doesn’t know it yet.
Many articles throughout the internet have weighed in on this and it is a pleasure to weigh in myself. Thank you Dixie Carter for making an impact this week and providing us more to discuss and share.
Please sound off below and let me and the rest of us know how you feel. Thank you for reading Making An Impact! and until the next time: “Don’t hate the playa, hate the game”
